Join illustrator Carson Ellis for a self-portrait tutorial while school is out. During our 90-minute session, we’ll use a simple template as the foundation to explore our faces in detail. What makes them uniquely ours and how do we translate that to paper? This will be an opportunity for quiet and meditation, to slow down and truly appreciate what’s in front of us. No art or illustration experience necessary. Bring a pencil, eraser, sharpener, and a copy of the self-portrait template which will be emailed to you for download. Participants without printer access can also request to have the template mailed to their home.
Carson Ellis is the author and illustrator of the bestselling picture books Home and Du Iz Tak? (a Caldecott Honor book). She has illustrated a number of books for kids, including The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart, The Composer is Dead by Lemony Snicket, and The Wildwood Chronicles by her husband, Colin Meloy. Carson is the illustrator-in-residence for Colin’s band, The Decemberists, and has earned multiple GRAMMY nominations for her album art design. She works occasionally as a fine artist and as an editorial illustrator for The New Yorker, The New York Times, Poetry Magazine, and other publications.
